TALLMADGE, Ohio (AP) -- Along came a spider, and Kim Smith says he and his Akron area family have stopped using their front door.

  • Name that spider | Photos
  • It's a unusual, super spider that has settled in on their front porch in Tallmadge, a nearly six-inch golden silk spider normally not found in northern states.

Smith says the family is trying not to disturb their visitor.

Plus, he says spiders give him the "heebie-jeebies."

Zoology professor Richard Bradley at Ohio State's Marion campus says the Smiths' large, yellow spider is harmless.

He speculates that it may have hitched a ride on the family's car when they visited South Carolina earlier this year.

Experts say the spider is likely to die when the weather turns cold.
