CLEVELAND -- How can a county with about 1.3 million residents have almost 1.1 million registered voters?
The answer is: It can't.
The Cuyahoga County Board of Elections is sending out almost 285,000 postcards to try and get its registered voting rolls current. That's more than one-fourth of the county's registered voters.
Some are going to registered voters who have filed change of address cards with the Post Office and moved elsewhere. Some are going to voters who may have moved to other Ohio counties, and are now voting there, but failed to tell election officials.
And most are going to voters who have not voted at all in the last two years.
"We're trying to clean up as many records as we can," said Board Director Jane Platten.
Platten readily acknowledges the county probably has a lot of dead voters still on the rolls. That's because the law requires official notification of a voter's death before a name can be removed. And that's not always forthcoming.
Cards are being mailed Friday. They should be delivered Saturday, Monday and Tuesday.
Some say this is not the cheapest, best way to do this. But it's what the law requires.
If you get a card and wish to keep voting , fill out the response and send it back ASAP.
