CLEVELAND -- Image plays a big role in politics, so that means every move is well thought out, right down to what the candidates are wearing.

For Senator Hillary Clinton, she is setting the precedent for women, as the first viable female candidate to make a run at the White House.

Hillary Clinton is taking the stage and is redefining the "power suit."

Dr. Eve Sandberg is a professor at Oberlin College, who also acts as a political advisor to female candidates.

She says voters focus on non-verbal cues as well as listening to the issues, and that includes dress.

Every fashion choice is deliberate. For instance in an earlier debate, Clinton wore pink. Dr. Sandberg says the color is feminine, and softens her image. It also makes her stand out because no other candidate will be wearing it.

Dr. Sandberg also says the colors she wears depend on the state and city she is in. To the west, women wear more colorful, less tailored clothing, than on the east coast.

When it comes to appealing to a male audience, the choices are a little tougher. Dr. Sandberg says Clinton often relies on commercials to get her message to men.
