Gas prices have some drivers trading in their gas guzzling SUV?S for more economical vehicles. But just how much you're really saving?
Aaron Perusek has been trying to sell his 2002--fully loaded GMC Yukon for two and a half months.
But no one is buying. "In the spring time I thought it would be a little slow, but now it's summer and I thought it would be able to sell it by now but we'll see," Perusek said.
Aaron's not alone. The higher the price of gas -- the more common it is to see for sale signs on SUV parked in front yards. Dealerships like "Junction Auto Sales" in Chardon, are also seeing the trend
"People are trading in the bigger vehicles assuming that the smaller vehicle is going to get better fuel economy, which they do, but they will take a payment with that as well so in the end sometimes the savings aren't all they're cracked up to be," said Sales Associate Matt Emrick. If you just look a fuel prices for the Yukon for the year, you'll spend about $1,900 a year.
If you downsize to the Pontiac Torrent you'll spend about $1,600 in gas.
That's a $300 saving.
You have to downsize even further to the Pontiac Vibe to save $900 in gas.
But for some families -- like the Sarver's who are using a small loaner car -- it's just too small for the savings.
?We need the room and more importantly we need the power to pull an AirStream," Sarver said. "We are campers, and this little car, wouldn't do it."
Meanwhile -- Aaron is hoping someone wants his Yukon.
"You hope that the next call is the one that's going to be it, you never know,? said Perusek.
Every year the government puts out a fuel economy guide, that let's you know how much you can expect to pay for gas, for a particular vehicle. Click on the link for more information.
