AKRON -- Just before 11 a.m. Tuesday, U.S. District Court Judge Sara Lioi began charging the seven-man, five-woman jury in the Cuyahoga County corruption trial of Jimmy Dimora and co-defendant Michael D. Gabor.
Lioi formally read into the court record that former Cuyahoga County Commissioner Jimmy Dimora, 56, of Independence, was charged with 34 crimes.
They include 4 counts of bribery, 2 counts of conspiracy to commit bribery, 9 counts of Hobbs Act extortion, 8 other counts of Hobbs Act extortion, 1 count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, 1 count of mail fraud, 2 counts of conspiracy to commit mail fraud, 1 count of conspiracy to obstruct justice, 1 count of falsification of records, 1 count of RICO conspiracy (racketeering), and 4 counts of filing false tax returns.
In a 148-page superseding indictment handed down on Sept. 7, 2011, Dimora was charged with counts 1 through 30 and counts 34 through 37.
In that same indictment, co-defendant Michael D. Gabor, 52, of Parma, was charged with 8 crimes.
Dimora had been charged twice previously, the first being Sept. 14, 2010, but this indictment supersedes, or "takes the place of" the other two indictments.
They include: 1 count of aiding and abetting bribery, 1 count of conspiracy to commit bribery, 1 count of aiding Hobbs Act extortion, 1 count of conspiracy to commit a Hobbs Act conspiracy, 1 count of aiding and abetting mail fraud, 1 count of conspiracy to commit mail fraud, 1 count of conspiracy to obstruct justice, and 1 count of RICO conspiracy.
Gabor was charged in counts 1, 17, 19, 21, 28, 31, 32 and 33.
Both men have pleaded not guilty. Hobbs Act is a federal law that prohibits actual or attempted robbery or extortion affecting interstate or foreign commerce.
