PORTAGE COUNTY -- A Civil War monument will be rededicated in Portage County on Oct. 10.
The monument, in Atwater, pays tribute to John H. Grate, Portage County's last surviving Civil War veteran, and the 49,000 other Ohioans who served in the Civil War. More than 7,000 Ohio troops gave their lives in that war.
A few months ago, the monument was damaged, when a car ran off the road and struck it.
Atwater Historical Society stepped in to manage the renovation of the monument. D & C Renovations of Ravenna did most of the work.
Now that the monument is restore, many people in the community felt the need to honor John Grate one more time, with a rededication. The rededication will include a parade and conclude with a Civil War military ball.
