CUYAHOGA FALLS -- A former anesthesiologist is in federal custody after dozens of pipe bombs, an assortment of firearms, and thousands of rounds of ammunition were found in his apartment.

Mark Campano, 56, was arrested by agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms at Akron General Medical Center, where he was being treated for hand and arm injuries.

He is charged with violating federal firearms and explosives statutes.

Campano was hurt Monday night when ammunition in his Cuyahoga Falls apartment, Center Park Place, exploded. When police arrived, they found a cache of weapons and explosives.

Authorities say they don't know why the Campano had the arsenal or if he had any plans to use the weapons. "In my career here our Department has investigated or responded to calls where pipe bombs have been made," Cuyahoga Falls Police Chief John Conley told WKYC, "but nothing to this large quantity or magnitude before."

Sgt. Gary Merton, Jr. says police first thought they came across a methamphetamine lab Monday night after explosions shook the apartment complex in Cuyahoga Falls.

Campano told an officer that he was loading shotgun shells when one of them blew up in his hands.

Campano lost his medical license in 2006, when the State Medical Board of Ohio found he had a drug problem.
