AKRON -- The five men face charges in the death of 28-year-old Mark McCollaugh, Jr., who was "beaten, tasered, and gassed" in the psychiatric area of the Summit County Jail.

Deputy Stephen Krendick will face murder charges for the death, which carries a 15-year to life-in-prison. Sgt. Brett Hadley and Deputy Brian Polinger face reckless homicide charges, and Deputy Mark Mayer and Deputy Dominic Martucci will face felonious assault charges.

"These charges are very serious," says Sheriff Drew Alexander. "If we have people that have broken the law, they will be held accountable; we want them to be held accountable. We will not tolerate this."

Only Martucci had any disciplinary action in the last 18 months, a charge of "Conduct Unbecoming of a Deputy Sheriff" for taking a candy bar from an inmate, according to Alexander.

The Sheriff says there are policies in place for "Mental Health Housing," "Use of Force," and "Use of Restraints." Alexander says the real problem is how to deal with people with mental illness in the criminal justice system.

"This is a tragic example of our continuing concern over housing individuals with mental health issues in county jails across the country," Alexander says.

All five men are in custody in Medina County Jail and will be arraigned at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday. They are all on mandatory leave without pay.
