AKRON -- The seven times deputies came to Addie Polk's home on Lacroix Avenue to serve foreclosure papers, she never answered the door.
The 90-year-old widow lives alone and knew from the papers left on her door over a period of months that she was facing eviction.
When two Summit County Deputies came to the home Wednesday to evict her, again there was no answer. They heard two "bangs" from the second floor of the house.
When a deputy got a ladder and climbed in through a second floor window, he found Mrs. Polk with two gunshot wounds in her shoulder. She had apparently tried to take her own life.
She is now being treated at Akron General Medical Center.
"We never force people out into the streets," said Sheriff's Lt. Kandy Fatheree. "The deputies always bring information about agencies that will help those who are evicted, including more than half a dozen agencies ready to offer temporary and long term housing. The deputies will drive those who are losing their homes to the housing."
The Summit County Sheriff's Department has three teams of deputies serving foreclosure notices every day.
