AKRON, Ohio -- A Springfield Township family is in mourning after their 16-year-old was killed in a hit-skip wreck.
Anthony Weakland was walking home with a friend last night along Albrecht Avenue, just a mile from his house, when a car left the roadway and struck him. He died instantly.
Friends say Weakland was a good kid, with dozens of friends and lots of questions.
"He always worried about other things, other than himself. He mostly worried about the world ending," said neighbor Ashley Lynn Smith.
Tuesday, it did for his friends and family.
"Anthony didn't do nothing to you. All Anthony was doing was walking with a friend. Just coming home," said John Wilson, his cousin.
Ohio State Highway Patrol investigators say an unknown vehicle drove off the roadway and hit Anthony around 9 p.m. Tuesday.
His friend, who the family identified as Michael, doesn't remember details about the car.
They want to know who was behind the wheel.
"He was 16 years old. He was taken entirely too young from us," said his sister Amy Weakland. "And he didn't deserve this because he was a good kid."
Troopers found additional clues Wednesday but, so far, small pieces of glass and windshield wipers aren't enough to identify a car or its driver.
"They could go to any car, but hopefully if we get a tip of a vehicle, we could match those up," said OSHP Lt. William Weirtz.
That's where they need help. And the family is asking, too, if you know something, speak up.
"Somebody please come forward. If you have a conscience, if you have the littlest of hearts, it is not fair to put our family through this," said Amy Weakland.
