A 3-year-old boy is dead after he apparently shot himself Monday evening.
Police were called to the Mount Vernon home around 6 p.m. Monday.
The boy is identified as 3-year-old Lucas Heagren.
His mother called 911 and said the child picked up the gun and shot himself above the left eye with a 9 mm firearm.
Police are calling the case an "unfortunate incident."
Paramedics first transported the child to Knox Community Hospital. He later was flown by medical helicopter to a second hospital where he died.
