CLEVELAND -- Cleveland's Slavic Village has received a grant that backers say will help rebuild infrastructure and enable the neighborhood to recover from the devastating housing market crash.
Thursday the District One Public Works Integrating Committee (DOPWIC) approved a grant of $4.2 million for Slavic Village's Fleet Avenue Streetscape Project. The rest of the money for the $6 million project will come from Cleveland and the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District.
The Fleet portion of the proposal covers plans for an area between Interstate 77 and Broadway Avenue. It includes projects to rebuild the roadway and sidewalks, and install bicycle lanes. The streetscape part of the project calls for refurbishments between East 49th and East 65th Streets.
Councilman Tony Brancatelli says the project is critical for attracting investment to his Ward 12 area. He says the schedule calls for ground breaking on the project to take place sometime this year.
