WESTLAKE -- The city's recreation center is taking precautions after three people reported skin irritation due to the mites.
Scabies is a skin irritation that occurs when a type of microscopic water-dwelling mite burrows into the skin and lays eggs.
It is spread by person to person contact and can often occur in crowded places.
Rec Center manager Bob DeMinico says the center received three reports of scabies over a week ago.
Staff immediately contacted the Cuyahoga County Board of Health, which advised the center on measures to take.
Letters were sent home to the gym's 12,000 members with information about scabies and treatment, if detected.
CCBH communications officer Kevin Brennan says, this incident is not considered an outbreak. No other cases have been reported since the initial discovery.
