CLEVELAND - The federal government set new fuel-efficiency standards for passenger cars, as local gas prices creep to record highs over the Labor Day weekend.
This past week, the Department of Transportation announced that cars will have to meet the equivalent of 54.5 miles per gallon by 2025.
The Obama Administration estimates the new standards will save consumers about $8,000 a year on gas. However, some industry analysts say the cost of vehicles will go up, and may not offset the savings.
Prices at Cleveland-area pumps are around $3.85 for regular unleaded. That's 17 cents higher than the last Labor Day record set in 2008.
