San Diego, CA (Sports Network) - Chase Headley's grand slam in the seventh
inning put the game out of reach for Arizona, as the San Diego Padres took the
rubber match of a three-game set, defeating the Diamondbacks 8-2.
Patrick Corbin (5-7) took the loss, giving up three runs on six hits over 5
1/3 innings. While in the game, he received just one run of support, which
came in the third inning off an RBI-groundout from Jason Kubel.
With the St. Louis Cardinals winning earlier on Sunday, the loss puts the
Diamondbacks 6 1/2 games out of a wild-card spot.
Andrew Werner (2-1) got the win and posted his fourth straight quality outing
in as many career starts. He pitched 6 1/3 solid innings, allowing just one
run on four hits while striking out six.
Carlos Quentin and Chris Denorfia each hit solo homers and scored two runs for
the Padres.
