Berea man charged in hit-skip involving off-duty officer

A Berea man has been charged in a hit-skip incident that left an off-duty Michigan police officer critically injured.

Gary Fury, 54, has been charged with aggravated vehicular assault and felony leaving the scene of an accident charges. He's scheduled to make a court appearance on September 12.

Police arrested Fury on Monday at his Berea home in connection with a September 4 incident on Interstate 71.

Off-duty Pinckney, Michigan officer Robert Charles Bielak had pulled onto the berm near the Ridge Road overpass to check a map when he was hit by a car.

The Cleveland Police Patrolmen's Association has set up a fund to help the Bielak family while they stay in Cleveland during Robert's recovery.
