San Diego, CA (Sports Network) - Edinson Volquez worked seven shutout innings
as the San Diego Padres downed the Los Angeles Dodgers, 2-1, in the opener of
a three-game set at Petco Park.
Volquez (11-11) allowed six hits and struck out four to pick up his fourth win
in six starts. It is Volquez's highest season win total since he won 17 games
with the Cincinnati Reds in 2008.
Houston Street allowed one run in the ninth, but stranded two runners to notch
his 23rd save of the season.
Yasmani Grandal drove in a run for the Padres, who have won two in a row.
Josh Beckett (1-3) was tagged for two runs -- one earned -- on five hits
while fanning seven in the loss.
Luis Cruz went 3-for-4 and A.J. Ellis drove in the only run for the
Dodgers, who trail the St. Louis Cardinals by 4 1/2 games for the final NL
wild card spot.
