BANGKOK -- Stock markets overseas have stalled today.

Disappointing U.S. corporate earnings are still dimming optimism about the American economy, ahead of some key economic reports later in the week.

European shares fell in early trading, as Wall Street futures indicated that stocks in the U.S. will also open lower.

The picture has been more mixed in Asia. Japan's main index managed a marginal gain, but there was a decline in China and in South Korea.

Japan's currency is at a three-month low against the dollar. A weak yen helps Japan's huge export sector by raising the value of company profits from overseas.
