Richmond, VA (Sports Network) - Dimitri Batten scored a career-high 23 points
to lead the Old Dominion Monarchs to a 63-61 victory over the Virginia
Cavaliers in the Governor's Holiday Hoops Classic at Richmond Coliseum.
For the Monarchs (2-10), Aaron Bacote added 17 points. Donte Hill finished
with 12 points and DeShawn Painter posted a double-double with 11 points and
11 rebounds..
Joe Harris led the Cavaliers (9-3) with 18 points, while Evan Nolte scored 15
points
Virginia opened the contest shooting 42.3 percent from the field, as they took
a 25-20 lead into the break. ODU really struggled with their shooting in the
first half, making just 33.3 percent of their field goal tries, including 4-
of-12 from beyond the three-point arc.
After the break, it was the Cavaliers turn to struggle from the field. They
shot just 37 percent in the second half, though they were able to hit on 6-
of-13 from three-point range. The Monarchs shot 44.4 percent from the field
and 5-of-11 on their three-point attempts. Old Dominion trailed 34-24 when
ODU went on a 21-4 run to take the lead. The pushed it to as high as nine
points. Virginia made a comeback attempt and closed the deficit to 57-54 on
Nolte's three-pointer with 33.6 seconds left. A free throw by Painter made it
58-54, but Nolte's three-point play off a rebound made it a one-point game.
But Old Dominion made 5 of 6 free throws in the final 21 seconds to hold on
for the victory.
The Monarchs had a 39-32 edge in rebounding. The teams combined for just 15
turnovers in the game.
