Lake County | More safety upgrades for I-90

LAKE COUNTY -- Channel 3 continues coverage of a dangerous stretch of I-90 here.

On Friday morning, crews installed new safety upgrades and are preparing for more Saturday morning.

If you drive down I-90 eastbound near state Route 44, you'll notice the new amber lights on top of every other orange barrel.

Crews installed them Friday morning so drivers can better see the road and prevent multi-vehicle accidents like the ones that happened Christmas Eve morning and another last Friday.

"We've had several meeting with ODOT and the construction companies and safety is all our top priorities, not just for motorists but for workers inside the construction zone," said Lt. Mark Neff.

In addition to the lights on the left side of the road, crews will add lights on the right side Saturday morning.

Already this week, ODOT added two speed trailers, three portable message signs, and four additional "55 mph speed limit" signs.

State troopers are also patrolling the area more often and handing out more speeding tickets.

Troopers say drivers need to do their part and slow down and leave more room between cars.

"It's just a recipe for disaster, so it's very important for motorists to take into consideration when traveling through these construction zones and make sure they pay attention to their speed and allow themselves plenty of distance to stop," said Neff.

I-90 will not shut down Saturday to add the lights.

Instead, troopers say there will be a rolling road block for crews to put up the barrels and lights.
