A missing dog is back with its owner after several months -- and if animals could talk, he'd have quite a story to tell.

Bucky the black labrador couldn't bear the thought of being away from his owner, even if it meant traveling five hundred miles to find him.

Bucky is a 3-year-old black lab and very friendly. For owner Mark Wessells, he's a best friend.

"Dogs are loyal and he's just really smart," Wessells says. "He knows, you know, I can have a conversation with him (laughs). He'll talk back."

In January, Wessells left Bucky with his dad in Virginia because he couldn't have a dog at his home in Myrtle Beach. But a short time later, Bucky disappeared.

Somehow, he traveled nearly 500 miles to the Grand Stand and two weeks ago he was taken in by a family in Carolina Forest.

The new owner brought him to the Grand Strand Animal Hospital where they discovered a microchip and they called Wessells.

"I thought I was gonna cry but I didn't. He definitely recognized me instantly. He still remembers some of his old commands and everything. Yeah, it's almost like he never left."

How Bucky made it there is still in question, but dogs have a strong sense of smell and direction -- and it looks like Bucky was determined to come home.

Wessells says he's never going to leave Bucky behind again.
