NORTH CAROLINA -- Gates County deputies are looking for a suspect who reportedly fell asleep at the doors of a restaurant after attempting to break in on Labor Day.

"It just makes you mad," said Tarheel BBQ owner Ricky Hedgepeth. "You worked for all your life and somebody tries to take it from you."

Surveillance cameras at the restaurant on US 13 show a man attempting to break into the restaurant on Labor Day. Cameras show the man arriving at the locked doors of the restaurant at 5 p.m. where he attempted to pry the restaurant's back door open for about 30 minutes.

"I couldn't believe how long he stayed," Hedgepeth added. "I was just surprised that he never looked around to see if anybody was watching him. It was like he didn't care."

The man first picked up a shovel to push the door open but it would not budge. The suspect gave up and found a place to sit down next to the restaurant and fell asleep.

"You can look at him and tell that he's pretty tired," Hedgepeth added. "t's just unbelievable. He then just laid down and slept."

The man was asleep for three hours and never managed to break into Hedgepeth's restaurant.

"He didn't steal anything from me, but if I can help stop him from doing it to somebody else that's what my main goal is," Hedgepeth added.

Anyone with information should call the Gates County Sheriff's Office.
