The ALS #IceBucketChallenge is flooding social media with videos of people finding various ways to douse themselves with frigid water. But there are others facing the real challenge of fighting ALS, a deadly disease that slowly robs its victims of their ability to walk, talk and breathe on their own.
Darrell Haymore is one of those facing that fight, but he's not doing it alone. His wife of ten years, Denya, left her job to care for Darrell full-time.
"In sickness and in health," Darrell says softly. "Yes, in sickness and in health baby," Denya responds as she wipes her husband's face with a tissue.
Denya tends to all of Darrell's physical needs and never leaves his side. Watch the video above to see the special bond this devoted couple shares.
"It has been a privilege, not a chore, but a privilege to take care of my husband with such debilitating circumstances," Denya says.
Just two years ago, Darrell's legs became weak and soon, he was no longer able to walk. His lungs are fine, but he needs a machine to help him breathe.
"It's like being stuck inside a tight sleeping bag," Darrell says.
But Darrell and Denya say their strong faith in God and the national attention and awareness happening across the country is helping them through this difficult time.
"To see the national attention for something that has never received such attention as this, it is extremely awesome," Denya says. To find out more about the ALS Association and make your own donation, click here.
