COLUMBUS, Ohio -- A man participating in a charity bike ride in Ohio's capital city has died after he crashed into a guardrail and flew over the handlebars.
Sheriff Dwight Radcliff tells The Columbus Dispatch that Charlie Y. Shu died Saturday morning after he lost control of his bicycle on a curve in Pickaway County. The crash happened during the Steve Barbour Memorial Tour, an event in honor of a bicyclist who was struck and killed by a pickup truck in 2009.
The sheriff says Shu had been wearing a helmet, but he suffered "massive head trauma" when he hit a guardrail support I-beam.
Tour director Frank Seebode tells the newspaper that Shu was going down a hill by himself when the crash occurred.
