LONDON -- Middletown's Kayla Harrison has become the first American ever to win a gold medal in judo at the Olympics.
She defeated Great Britain's Gemma Gibbons in the finals of the 78kg weight class in women's judo in London. Gibbons had the full support of her hometown crowd, but it still wasn't enough to defeat Harrison who had her sights set on making history and claiming the top prize.
Harrison reached the final by defeating the top ranked Mayra Aguiar from Brazil in the semi-final match.
