Singer Chris Brown was in a Los Angeles courtroom Monday after testing positive for marijuana in Virginia.
The judge has to decide if Brown violated his probation.
Brown told the judge he smoked the pot in California where he has a prescription card for it and was tested in Virginia, where he is fulfilling his community service.
He is on a five-year probation for the 2009 assault on his then-girlfriend, singer Rihanna.
The state of California doesn't require drug testing for Brown's probation, but the judge says Virginia probably does and he needs to be mindful of that state's laws, since that's where he's doing his service.
The judge set a November 1 hearing date, when she'll make a decision if he violated probation, and gave him some advice.
She told Brown he isn't an average citizen who can do whatever he wants and reminded him that he is a role model to children.
