A local man has landed a spot on SyFy's hit reality show "Face Off" -- David "House" Greathouse is one of 14 new contestants competing in the special makeup effects battle.
The show's fourth season featuring Greathouse is set to debut on Tuesday, Jan. 15 at 9 p.m. (see a season preview at the bottom of this story).
Although Greathouse currently lives near Mansfield in Crestline, his hometown is Cleveland.
Siince the early '90s, Greathouse has worked professionally on numerous films including "Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight" and "The Usual Suspects."
He has also spent many years volunteering his time for charity by scaring people with the Legion of Terror improvisational horror acting troupe at Bloodview Haunted House in Broadview Heights. His bio on SyFy.com says Greathouse, 41, has an expertise in sculpting and prosthetic application.
"House is a completely self-taught SFX makeup artist," his bio declares. "He got his start at just 10 years old in his aunt's costume shop, where she turned him on to special effects makeup." House honed his skills designing and performing in haunted houses. House considers himself very fortunate to have worked as a shop rat in Los Angeles, where he believes he was able to pick the brains and grab some talent of some of the industry's best."
He is currently working at Robert Kurtzman's Creature Corps in Crestline.
His girlfriend, Beki Ingram, who also works at Creature Corps, competed on the second season of "Face Off." She finished in sixth place.
"Face Off" is a reality competition with weekly eliminations based on the contestants' special effects makeup creations. Think of it as "Project Runway" with monsters, aliens, creatures and gore mixed in.
Ultimately, the last person standing wins $100,000, a 2013 Fiat 500 and the opportunity to become a guest lecturer at the Makeup Forever Academies in New York and Paris.
Since debuting its first season in January 2011, "Face Off" has been a critical and ratings success for the network with season three averaging 1.5 million viewers in the 18-49 demo.
"Face Off" is hosted by actress McKenzie Westmore and judged by a panel of award-winning makeup artists: Glenn Hetrick, Ve Neill and Neville Page.
