What is RSS?
Really Simple Syndication (RSS) is an XML-based format for content distribution and sharing content such as news headlines. RSS feeds usually include headlines and descriptions with links back to the publishing site for the full story.

How do Web sites use RSS?
Many Web sites currently offer RSS feeds. Because they're automated, the feeds keep readers up-to-date without requiring them to subscribe to an e-mail newsletter (or expecting them to remember to visit throughout the day). In effect, RSS feeds allow readers to keep up with a site easily, and allow Web keepers to focus their energy on keeping their sites fresh.

How can I receive RSS feeds?
Desktop software applications known as news readers or aggregators can collect, update and display RSS feeds from a wide variety of sources. A number of news readers are available for you to download, many at no cost. Modern browsers, including Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox, integrate RSS feeds into a toolbar button know as an active bookmark. Google lists a number of stand-alone news aggregators, none of which are associated with WKYC.com, that you can download and test in this List of News Aggregators.

What RSS feeds are available from WKYC.com?
WKYC.com RSS feeds are based on content published to our main Web site and are updated frequently. To subscribe to RSS feeds from WKYC.com, simply select a content section of interest to you from the list provided on the RSS Homepage. Once there, click on either the text link or the orange button, and follow your news reader's instructions for subscribing to (or adding) feeds. Repeat to add as many feeds as you like.

How do you subscribe?
Get a feed reader. Using a web-based version lets you check your favorite sites at work and home, for example. If you use Google or Yahoo mail, you can set one up online. Try the Yahoo service here: my.yahoo.com. Or try a service like netvibes.com. Or, download a free program. Windows users can try BlogExpress.

Find a feed that you're interested in. More often than not, feeds are marked with the following image: RSS. Copy the shortcut (link) to the feed and paste it into your feed reader.

For example, that feed for Cleveland-area news looks like this: http://www.wkyc.com/rss/rss_localnews.aspx

If you click on it using Internet Explorer 6, you get an ugly page. But, if you paste that link into your feed reader, you'll get every recent headline posted about Cleveland news from Channel 3.

Why should I use this?
RSS lets you keep up with information of interest quickly and easily. Once you've set up a few feeds of interest, the time savings is amazing: No more aimlessly going to a news homepage while bored at work. No need to return to those web sites until you find a story of interest. Instead, you can scan headlines from dozens of sites and find articles of interest -- without hunting and pecking on individual sites.

Please take a few moments and experiment with our RSS feeds -- a quick and easy way to keep up with the Channel 3 News team.
