Barcelona, Spain (Sports Network) - Tournament stalwart Roberta Vinci came
from behind to win her first-round match Monday at the $220,000 Barcelona
Ladies Open.
The fourth-seeded reigning champion came back to beat France's Mathilde
Johansson 1-6, 6-1, 6-1 on the red clay at Centre Municipal de Tenis Vall
d'Hebron.
Vinci has appeared in the last three Barcelona finals, having topped Czech
Lucie Hradecka in last year's finale, also titled here in 2009, and finished
the runner-up in 2010.
Up next for Vinci will be Romanian Simona Halep.
Meanwhile, sixth-seeded Czech Petra Cetkovska snuck past struggling Israeli
Shahar Peer 6-1, 5-7, 7-5 and seventh-seeded Italian Sara Errani bested
Romanian Irina-Camelia Begu 7-6 (7-5), 6-4.
Additional Day-1 wins came for Spanish wild card Garbine Muguruza Blanco and
Halep, who handled promising American Sloane Stephens 6-4, 6-4.
The top seeds here are French Open runner-up Francesca Schiavone and German
Julia Goerges, both of whom will see action on Tuesday. Schiavone titled here
in 2010 by beating Vinci in an all-Italian finale.
This week's winner will claim $37,000.
