Portland, OR (Sports Network) - The Portland Timbers announced Wednesday that
the club has signed defender Steven Smith and waived midfielder James Marcelin.
The 26-year-old Smith has spent the past nine years playing in Scotland and
England, including seven seasons with Rangers in the Scottish Premier League.
Smith appeared in 55 games for the storied Glasgow club, including matches in
the Champions League and Europa League, before moving to England to play for
Norwich City and Preston North End.
"Steven has impressed us, both on the field and as a person, during his trial,"
said Portland head coach John Spencer. "He is a hard working defender who
possesses a winning mentality. Steven has been a part of successful clubs
throughout his career and has experience at high levels, including playing in
the Champions League."
Marcelin, 25, appeared in three matches during the 2012 season and has played
in 23 games over the past two seasons with the Timbers. He first joined the
club in 2010, the Timbers' final season in the second division.
