Helsinki, Finland (Sports Network) - Paul Stastny totaled a goal and two
assists as the United States downed Switzerland, 5-2, on the final day of
preliminary round play at the 2012 World Championship.
Cam Fowler, Alex Goligoski, Bobby Ryan and Jeff Petry also tallied for the
Americans, who will face Finland in the quarterfinals on Thursday. Jimmy
Howard added 25 stops for the USA, which finished second in Group H to Canada.
Ivo Reuthemann and Morris Trachsler scored for the Swiss, who ended the
tourney with a 2-5 mark. Reto Berra coughed up all five goals on 24 shots in
defeat.
Earlier in the day, Ryan O'Reilly scored a pair of goals and Cam Ward made 17
saves, lifting Canada to a 5-1 win over Belarus.
Corey Perry, Ryan Getzlaf and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins also scored for Canada,
which finished with a 6-0-1 mark. The lone loss for the Canadians came against
the United States in overtime.
Canada will square off against Slovakia in the quarterfinals. The Slovaks
clinched a spot in the next round Tuesday with a 5-4 win over France.
In Stockholm, Norway scored five goals in the second period en route to a
6-2 rout of Denmark. The Norwegians will face Russia in the quarterfinals.
The Swedes concluded the preliminaries with a 4-0 decision over Latvia. Henrik
Zetterberg notched three points on a goal and two helpers, backing a 22-save
performance from Viktor Fasth.
Sweden will take on the Czech Republic in the quarters.
Maris Jucers stopped 40 shots in the loss, as Latvia finished fifth in Group S
at 2-5.
The Czechs finished the preliminary round on a strong note, thrashing Germany
by an 8-1 count. Petr Koukal tallied twice, David Krejci totaled three points,
while Lukas Krajicek, Ales Hemsky and Jiri Novotny added a goal and assist
each.
