Toronto, ON (Sports Network) - Olympic bronze medalist Juan Martin del Potro suffered a second-round loss Wednesday at the $2.649 million Rogers Cup tennis event, the sixth of nine ATP Masters tournaments this year.

The sixth-seeded former U.S. Open champion del Potro succumbed to Czech veteran Radek Stepanek 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) on the hardcourts at Rexall Centre. Stepanek fired nine aces past his tall Argentine counterpart.

Del Potro was the 2009 Rogers Cup runner-up in Montreal, as this event shifts between Montreal and Toronto each year.

Fifth-seeded Serb Janko Tipsarevic avoided an upset by getting past gritty Russian Mikhail Youzhny, 7-6 (7-2), 6-4.

Meanwhile, 10th-seeded Croat Marin Cilic handled former Australian Open runner-up Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus 7-5, 6-3 and 12th-seeded German Philipp Kohlschreiber drubbed Italian qualifier Fabio Fognini 6-2, 6-2.

Other second-round action saw 14th-seeded Frenchman Richard Gasquet dismiss Kazakhstan's Mikhail Kukushkin 6-3, 7-5 and Spaniard Marcel Granollers oust 15th-seeded German Florian Mayer 6-3, 6-4. Gasquet was the runner-up here in Montreal back in 2006.

The newest Rogers Cup champ will collect $522,550.
