Antalya, Turkey (Sports Network) - The United States holds a four-stroke lead over Mexico after the first round of the World Amateur Team Championship courtesy of Thursday's record-breaking performance.

Chris Williams and Justin Thomas shot 64 and 67, respectively, to break the all-time record for lowest 18-hole team score. Their combined mark of 13- under-par 131 bested the previous record of 132, which was accomplished three times, most recently by both Sweden and Wales in 2006.

"Everything went right today," said Williams, who posted seven birdies and one eagle on Thursday at the Cornelia Golf Club. "I've been playing well in practice and to be able to support the team was exciting."

Mexico sits in second place after Sebastian Vazquez and Rodolfo Cazaubon shot 66 and 69, respectively, at Cornelia for a combined 9-under 135.

"We have an outstanding team that is capable and experienced," said Mexican captain Jorge Coughlan. "That is the difference from our past teams. They are experienced now."

The Republic of Korea fired an 8-under 134 to grab third place after the first round, while defending champion France (135), Netherlands (137) and Spain (137) are tied for fourth.

France and the Republic of Korea played at par-71 Antalya Golf Club, while Netherlands and Spain played at par-72 Cornelia.

The Sports Network
