Huntington, WV (Sports Network) - DeAndre Kane drained two key foul shots with
21 seconds left in the game to propel the Marshall Thundering Herd to a 61-58
decision over the UNC-Wilmington Seahawks in a non-conference bout at the Cam
Henderson Center.
Kane scored a team-high 16 points to go with five assists and four steals for
the Thundering Herd (5-3). Nigel Spikes recorded the games only double-double
with 10 points and 13 rebounds. Elijah Pittman and D.D. Scarver scored 13 and
12 points, respectively.
Craig Ponder recorded a game-high 26 points, but was the only player to score
in double-figures for UNC-Wilmington (3-4), which struggled to find success on
the offensive end. Keith Rendleman contributed nine points and six boards
after playing only 19 minutes due to foul trouble.
The first half ended in a 28-28 after DeAndre Kane recorded a steal to set up
a dunk with eight seconds left. The Seahawks played an impressive defensive
half as they forced 10 turnovers and recording six steals. However, UNCW
managed to make only 37.5 percent of its field goal attempts in the opening
half.
Despite UNC-Wilmington heating up to shoot an impressive 58.3 percent from the
floor in the second half, their 19 fouls allowed 16 points at the free-throw
line for Marshall. The Herd managed to pull out the victory despite making
only 1-of-6 attempts from beyond the arc in the final 20 minutes.
Marshall outrebounded UNC-Wilmington 39-30, and held them to only 3-of-12
shooting behind the three-point line in the contest.
