Moraga, CA (Sports Network) - Brad Waldow scored 17 points, leading five
players in double figures, as the Saint Mary's Gaels delivered an 86-68 win
over the Cal Poly Mustangs in non-conference action at McKeon Pavilion.
Also scoring in double figures for the Gaels (5-2) as they snapped a two-game
slide were Matt Hodgson and Matthew Dellavedova with 13 points apiece, the
latter adding a game-high nine assists, followed by Jorden Page with 12 points
and Mitchell Young 11 in the victory.
The Mustangs (2-3), who were coming off an upset win of UCLA last weekend,
were paced by Chris Eversley with a game-high 25 points, while Brian Bennett
contributed 10 points in the setback.
SMC erupted to a sizzling 66.7 percent shooting from the field in the first
half, hitting on 4-of-7 shots beyond the arc, as the hosts moved out to a
42-35 lead at the break. Cal Poly tried to keep up as it connected on 60.0
percent from the floor and 6-of-8 on the perimeter in the period.
The second half again saw the Gaels with the hot hand, knocking down 61.9
percent from the field, not to mention 15-of-18 at the free-throw line, en
route to the 18-point win.
The Mustangs finished the meeting with an impressive 52.1 percent accuracy
from the field and 9-of-18 out on the perimeter, but were outscored at the
charity stripe, 21-9.
