Arlington, TX (Sports Network) - Kevin Butler poured in a team-high 18 points
as the Texas-Arlington Mavericks completed a 68-47 rout of the New Mexico
State Aggies in the Western Athletic Conference opener for both sides at the
College Park Center.
Drew Charles provided a spark off the bench for UT-Arlington (6-3, 1-0 WAC)
with 12 points as it won for the third time in four outings. Brandon Edwards
made an impact on the glass with 11 rebounds and Jordan Reves filled up the
stat sheet by scoring eight points, grabbing eight boards, and rejecting five
shots.
Daniel Mullings paced NMSU (6-7, 0-1) with 21 points on 7-of-9 shooting from
the field, but he also committed a game-high eight turnovers. Sim Bhullar
netted 14 points and blocked five shots while Bandja Sy pulled down seven
rebounds. The Aggies have been handed a loss in three of their last four
games.
The Mavericks took a 37-24 lead into halftime after they knocked down 55.2
percent of their field goal attempts including 5-of-10 from beyond the arc in
the first half. NMSU fell behind after shooting 32.1 percent from the floor in
the opening 20 minutes.
The Aggies continued to struggle after the break as they went 0-of-7 from 3-
point range. UT-Arlington extended its advantage in the second half by
converting 8-of-13 at the charity stripe.
NMSU finished the game with a 2-of-18 clip from beyond the arc and 12 misses
at the free throw line. The Mavericks enjoyed a 44-37 edge in the rebounding
battle en route to the decision.
