Cape Girardeau, MO (Sports Network) - Corey Wilford scored 19 points as he
helped lead the SE Missouri State Redhawks to an 86-84 win over the Governors
of Austin Peay in Ohio Valley Conference play at the Show Me Center.
Coming up a rebound shy of a double-double for the Redhawks (10-6, 2-0) was
A.J. Jones who tallied 16 points, followed by Lucas Nutt with 14 points and
Nino Johnson with 12 and nine boards of his own as the team won for the fourth
straight game.
The Governors (4-11, 0-1) were paced by Travis Betran who tallied a game-high
30 points, the first 30-point game of the season for an Austin Peay player,
who still suffered a seventh-straight setback. Also scoring in double
figures for the visitors were Will Triggs and Anthony Campbell with 29 and 11
points, respectively, the former also clearing a team-best 11 rebounds as he
established a new career high in scoring.
A tight game throughout the first half, SEMO had to work hard at both ends of
the floor in order to come up with a 35-30 advantage at the break. Betran got
off to a quick start for the Govs, converting his first four shot attempts and
delivering 14 of his team's first 23 points, but still APSU trailed at
intermission.
In the second half APSU led by as many as seven points with nine minutes to
play, but a late 11-0 run by the Redhawks put them out ahead by eight, 76-68
at the 2:41 mark but still the hosts had to hold on for the two-point win down
the stretch.
In a game that featured six ties and 14 lead changes, SEMO took control at the
free-throw line where it outscored the Govs by a 23-6 margin.
