New Rochelle, NY (Sports Network) - Lamont Jones poured in 30 points to push
the Iona Gaels to a 78-70 victory over the Manhattan Jaspers in a Metro
Atlantic Athletic Conference tilt at the Hynes Athletics Center.
Jones went 8-of-17 from the field and 10-of-10 at the free throw line to help
the Gaels (9-6, 3-1 MAAC) to their third win in a row. Taaj Ridley added 14
points and seven rebounds while Tavon Sledge dealt out eight assists.
Emmy Andujar led Manhattan (4-10, 2-2) with 17 points. Rhamel Brown
contributed 16 points, nine boards, and seven blocks for the Jaspers as they
suffered their fifth setback in six outings.
Manhattan outscored the hosts, 9-1, in second chance points in the opening 20
minutes to build a 36-30 lead as the game progressed into the intermission.
The Gaels made only 33.3 percent of their field goal attempts in the first
half.
Iona heated up to knock down a red-hot 62.5 percent of its shots from the
floor including a near perfect 8-of-9 from beyond the arc after the break. The
Jaspers were unable to keep up despite hitting 13 of their 27 field goal
tries. The contest was a two-possession game for the final 5:42 of play.
Manhattan outscored the hosts, 40-26, in points in the paint, but the Gaels
tallied 10 makes from 3-point range to the Jaspers' five to come out on top.
