Akron, OH (Sports Network) - Nick Harney led the way with 15 points as the
Akron Zips completed a 65-43 rout of the Western Michigan Broncos in the Mid-
American Conference opener for both sides at James A. Rhodes Arena.
Brian Walsh, Alex Abreu, and Pat Forsythe chipped in 12 points each for Akron
(10-4, 1-0 MAC) as it picked up its sixth victory in a row. Abreu also dealt
out five assists while Forsythe pulled down eight rebounds.
Austin Richie paced WMU (8-6, 0-1) with 11 points, but none of his teammates
joined him in double-figures as it suffered its second consecutive loss.
Both teams struggled in the early stages of the contest. The Broncos shot just
28 percent from the floor and committed nine turnovers in the opening 20
minutes while Akron hit just 29.4 percent of its first half field goal
attempts. The Zips ended the period on a 12-6 run that gave them a 25-19 lead
Akron then scored 10 consecutive points to start off the second stanza and
build a sizeable 35-21 advantage on the scoreboard. WMU went just 1-of-9 from
3-point range in the second half while the Zips knocked down 6-of-12 from
beyond the arc to improve to 8-0 at home.
Akron held a 41-30 edge in the rebounding battle and converted WMU's 15
turnovers into 19 points.
