Kingston, RI (Sports Network) - Willie Clayton recorded a double-double with
11 points and a game-high 13 rebounds as he helped led the Charlotte 49ers to
a 58-50 win over the Rhode Island Rams in Atlantic 10 Conference play at the
Ryan Center.
Also scoring in double figures for the 49ers (14-2, 2-0 A-10) was DeMario
Mayfield who tallied a game-high 17 points off the bench, while Pierria Henry
responded with six points and 10 boards in the team's third straight win.
The Rams (5-10, 0-2), losers of two straight and three of the last four, were
paced by Mike Powell and Andre Malone who scored 16 and 13 points,
respectively.
URI shot an impressive 52.4 percent from the floor in the first half and was
guilty of just five turnovers, yet that only translated into a one-point lead
at the break, 31-30.
In the second half the Rams fell apart, connecting on only 7-of-26 (.269) from
the field and missing all 11 chances behind the 3-point line, en route to the
eight-point setback.
Charlotte dominated on the glass, 45-25, as it limited the hosts to just four
offensive rebounds on the afternoon.
