Athens, GA (Sports Network) - Jalen Steele racked up 21 points and seven
rebounds, as Mississippi State knocked off SEC foe Georgia, 72-61, in a battle
of the Bulldogs at Stegeman Coliseum.
Freshman Craig Sword chipped in with 16 points to help the Bulldogs (7-7, 2-0
SEC) claim their first three-game winning streak of the season.
Kentavious Caldwell-Pope led Georgia (6-9, 0-2) with 16 points, followed by
Charles Mann with 14.
MSU shot a healthy 50 percent from the floor in the first half but needed a
late rally to take a 36-35 lead into intermission. Georgia's Tim Dixon capped
a 12-0 run with a layup to give the Bulldogs a 30-23 lead with just over five
minutes to play in the half. However, MSU closed out the period with a 13-5
spurt to regain the lead.
The teams continued to battle back and forth in the second half. After Dixon
made another layup to knot the score at 50-50 with nine minutes to play, MSU
went on a 12-1 run to take control. UGA was held to 30.8-percent shooting over
the final 20 minutes, and that included an 0-of-8 effort from the perimeter.
Georgia was never able to get anything going offensively, as the Bulldogs were
held to 32-percent shooting for the game and committed 15 turnovers.
