Fort Wayne, IN (Sports Network) - Estan Tyler scored a game-high 19 points to
lead the UMKC Kangaroos to a 63-59 victory over the IUPU-Fort Wayne Mastodons
in a Summit League tilt at Memorial Coliseum.
Thomas Staton added 14 points for UMKC (6-14, 3-5 Summit) on an efficient 6-
of-7 shooting from the floor while Kirk Korver and Trinity Hall chipped in 11
points apiece. Fred Chatmon grabbed 10 rebounds as the Kangaroos picked up
their second win in three outings.
Frank Gaines paced the Mastodons (9-12, 2-5) with 17 points as they dropped
their third decision in their last four appearances. Mario Hines added 13
points and Joe Reed provided 10 points on 3-of-4 shooting from the field in
the losing effort.
IPFW looked like it might run away with it early on, as Pierre Bland converted
a traditional three-point play to give it an 18-9 lead with 7:59 left in the
first period. The Kangaroos rallied back and despite being outscored, 18-8, in
the paint in the opening 20 minutes, went into the intermission trailing by a
slim, 26-25 margin.
The second half was a back-and-forth affair that featured 10 lead changes and
five ties. The game was tied at 59 before Chatmon put the Kangaroos ahead by
two with a layup at the 3:25 mark of the second half. Hall sealed the deal for
UMKC by adding a pair of free throws with 14 seconds remaining. The Kangaroos
scored nine second chance points in the second half and IPFW could not
register one as it fell at home for just the second time this season.
UMKC used a 30-21 edge in the rebounding battle to overcome its 17 turnovers.
The Mastodons finished just 2-of-8 from beyond the arc.
