Vermillion, SD (Sports Network) - Led by 26 points from Justin Simmons, the
Nebraska Omaha Mavericks took down the South Dakota Coyotes, 95-90, in a
Summit League showdown at the DakotaDome.
Alex Welhouse and C.J. Carter each added 17 points for the Mavericks (6-16,
3-6 Summit), while John Karhoff and Caleb Steffensmeier each finished with 14
points. Welhouse also pulled down a team-best nine rebounds.
For the Coyotes (8-13, 4-5), Juevol Myles led the way with 26 points, while
Brandon Bos tallied 16 points, eight rebounds, and five assists in 40 minutes
of action. Steve Tecker scored 14 points, Trevor Gruis chipped in with 13
points, and they both grabbed nine boards.
Omaha shot the ball well in the first half, connecting on 54.8 percent of
their field goal tries, including 7-of-16 from beyond the 3-point arc, as they
took a slim, 43-41, lead at halftime. South Dakota kept it close by draining
6-of-12 from 3-point range, part of a 44.1 percent shooting performance in the
first half.
After the break, the Mavericks continued to have the hot hand, making 57.6
percent of their field goal tries, including 6-of-10 from 3-point distance.
Staying on their heels, the Coyotes hit on 47.4 percent of their field goal
attempts and 5-of-12 from 3-point range. Trailing by 13 points with just
under eight minutes to play, South Dakota went on a 16-4 run to pull within
one, 81-80, but never managed to come all the way back. A Myles 3-point
attempt with three seconds remaining that would have tied the contest was off
the mark and two free throws by Carter sealed the victory for the Mavericks.
South Dakota had a slight edge in points in the paint, 34-32, and in
rebounding, 36-35.
