KENT -- Banners and sweatshirts can be the best billboards for universities. And if you can stamp Final 4 or even Bowl on it, it makes even more money.

The publicity for the bowl game will be in the millions. They're still counting. Last summer's College World Series was another $3 million worth.

And let's not forget the Kent State Golden Flashes basketball run to the Elite 8 in 2002.

March Madness is as much about basketball as it is bucks. A few examples:

  • 2009: Cornell lost in the first round of the tournament but still won with a school record of donations of $3.5 million
  • 2011: Virginia Commonwealth made a run all the way to the Final 4, and the bank. Donations went up 376 percent

It's a simple formula: win, get in and cash in
