Sandy, UT (Sports Network) - Alvaro Sabario's strike 10 minutes from time
salvaged a point for Real Salt Lake in a 1-1 draw with the Colorado Rapids on
Saturday at Rio Tinto Stadium.
Both sides had ample scoring opportunities in the first half, but it was the
visitors who struck first in the 37th minute through rookie forward Deshorn
Brown.
Brown controlled a pass on the right flank, took a few touches to his left and
ripped a low, right-footed shot into the far corner past Salt Lake goalkeeper
Nick Rimando for the 1-0 advantage.
After the break, it was the hosts that were on the front foot and Saborio
pulled his side level in the 80th minute when he picked off a poor clearing
attempt from Colorado in the box and fired a right-footed strike past Colorado
goalkeeper Clint Irwin.
Real Salt Lake pushed for a winner over the final 10 minutes and had a few
fantastic opportunities, but a deciding goal never materialized and the teams
settled for a point apiece in the first edition of the Rocky Mountain Cup this
season.
Salt Lake is an impressive 31-5-6 all-time when Saborio finds the back of the
net.
The result gives Colorado its first point of the season and it will look for a
victory next week against Los Angeles, while Real Salt Lake travels to Texas
to face FC Dallas.
