SAN ANTONIO -- Ashland University women's basketball team brought home the national championship in Division II defeating Dowling 71-56, in San Antonio, Texas.
It is the first national championship for Ashland University in a "team" sport.
Over the past two seasons, the AU women's basketball team has gone 70-3, won back-to-back GLIAC regular season and tournament championships, back-to-back NCAA Division II regional championships and played in to two straight national championship games.
The win by the Eagles marks the just the second time a women's basketball team from the GLIAC has won a national title.
Grand Valley State won it all in 2006, defeating American International 58-52.
It also marked the third straight year a GLIAC team advanced to the final with AU doing it in the past two years, while Michigan Tech finished as national runner-up in 2011 to Clayton State.
