The Hague, Netherlands (Sports Network) - Tobin Heath opened the scoring while
Christen Press added a brace to see the United States women's national team
claim a 3-1 victory over the Netherlands in a friendly match at Kyocera
Stadium on Tuesday.
The opening goal came in the 36th minute of play after Sydney Leroux centered
a low cross that was dummied by Press and slotted home by Heath from 15 yards
Leroux helped set up the second goal just before halftime as her well-place
through ball released Press on goal. The 24-year-old made her way around the
'keeper and calmly slipped her shot into the back of the net.
Press made it three at the hour mark with some fine individual play. She
turned her defender inside out before lashing a shot just inside the far post.
The Dutch managed to pull back a consolation goal nine minutes from time as
Manon Melis latched on to a diagonal ball and lofted a shot over the head of
Ashlyn Harris, but the match belonged to Heath, Press and the Americans.
The win sees the U.S. women preserve their unbeaten record so far this year,
going 6-0-2 in their first eight matches of 2013.
The Americans return to action on June 2 with a friendly match against Canada.
