Barcelona, Spain (Sports Network) - Fourth-seeded Spaniard Nicolas Almagro
managed to record a third-round victory before rain wreaked havoc on
Thursday's schedule at the $2.23 million Barcelona Open tennis event.
The world No. 12 Almagro cruised past 15th-seeded fellow countryman Marcel
Granollers 6-3, 6-4 on the red clay at Real Club de Tenis Barcelona.
Almagro's quarterfinal opponent on Friday will be seventh-seeded Argentine
Juan Monaco, who snuck past 10th-seeded Frenchman Jeremy Chardy 6-0, 7-6
One other result saw 16th-seeded Brazilian Thomaz Bellucci fight back to beat
resurgent Russian qualifier Dmitry Tursunov 4-6, 6-1, 6-3.
Eleventh-seeded rising Slovak Martin Klizan was leading eighth-seeded German
Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-1, 6-7 (2-7), 4-3 when play was called for the day.
Former world No. 1 Spanish hero Rafael Nadal was among those who had their
third-round matches pushed back to Friday. The reigning two-time and seven-
time overall Barcelona champion will face 13th-seeded Frenchman Benoit Paire,
with the winner moving on to play a quarterfinal match, also on Friday.
Nadal has won his last 35 matches in Barcelona and beat David Ferrer in the
last two all-Spanish finals here.
The reigning French Open champion lost to Novak Djokovic in the Monte
Carlo Masters final last week.
Five matches in all were either suspended or postponed because of inclement
weather on Day 4. Third-seeded former Wimbledon runner-up Tomas Berdych and
fifth-seeded Canadian slugger Milos Raonic were among those also getting
rained out on Thursday.
