Oskaloosa, IA (Sports Network) - Three-time NASCAR Sprint Cup series champion Tony Stewart broke both bones in his lower right leg in a sprint car race Monday night at Southern Iowa Speedway.

Stewart-Haas Racing confirmed the severity of the injury Tuesday morning. Stewart immediately underwent surgery after he was transported to a local hospital. Another update on Stewart's condition is expected Tuesday afternoon.

The injury will keep Stewart out of this weekend's road course race at Watkins Glen. Stewart-Haas Racing did not immediately announce a replacement driver for Stewart's No. 14 Chevrolet.

The team canceled a planned test for Tuesday at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

Stewart was leading the 30-lap feature of a race called the Front Row Challenge, but with five laps left Josh Higday's car was involved in a wreck with the cars of Stewart, Tasker Phillips and Tony Shilling.

Stewart has one Sprint Cup victory this season, the June 2 event at Dover. He's currently 11th in the season points standings.
