CLEVELAND -- Our great Lake Erie is a blessing for many.
Those who boat and fish her waters know the joy it brings, but what about those who don't get the chance to ride the waves?
The Cleveland Police Department has a program that gets kids out on the water for some fun.
WKYC Photojournalist Carl "Big Daddy" Bachtel went along to capture the fun.
The fishing boat "Holiday" was ready, the kids were ready, but the lake? She was angry, as a strong north wind put a damper on the Cleveland Kids Fishing Day, but these kids from the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Cleveland didn't mind.
For many, this was their first time on a boat.
Even Cleveland Police Chief Michael McGrath was there.
The Cleveland Police Foundation sponsors the event.
It brings the police officers and kids together to share these experiences, and that's invaluable. You can't put a price on it.
Ater a tour of Cleveland Harbor, it was time to wet a line. Fishing was slow, but the kids had fun.
After getting skunked by the fish, the kids did catch a photo with Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson, then were treated to a cookout, making memories to take home from their day on the water.
